The Curry Conundrum - Chaxu Garg
Hello classmates! (or maybe some curious yet unlucky readers who bumped into this)
Today, I am here to write about the prejudice and stereotypes that goes along with the Indian Cuisine especially in Western Culture. Now, before we delve into the world of spicy yet diverse Indian food, it's important to understand how and where these views are originating from my life.
So, I had the amazing experience of attending Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden for an exchange semester in the later half of 2022, where I met some wonderful human beings from all parts of the world. Whenever I would have a conversation about Indian Food with my colleagues, while as much as they loved Indian food, their views mostly lingered around some kind of "curry" and "naan bread", which I think don't do justice to the rich Indian cuisine. I hope this blog would be lead to breaking up of western stereotypes about Indian cuisine and introduce them to the rich and diverse dishes that we bring to the table.
Today, let's embark on a culinary journey, exploring a stereotype that has lingered in the global consciousness—the assumption that all Indian cuisine revolves around a ubiquitous curry.
Spoiler alert: there's a rich tapestry of flavours waiting to be discovered beyond the curry conundrum.
The Curry Chronicles
Ah, curry—the word itself conjures up images of a fragrant, spicy stew that seems to represent all of Indian cuisine. While curry is undeniably a delicious and integral part of our culinary landscape, reducing the entirety of Indian food to this one dish oversimplifies the vast array of flavors, techniques, and regional specialties that define our gastronomic heritage.
P.S: I can speak for all Indians when I say that we hate when someone calls our different kinds of dishes a "curry". The word doesn't exist in the Indian dictionary.
